Building a Patio correctly should reflect the space around by combining the indoor with the outdoor and drawing you further into your outdoor space.

When considering your patio design it is vital that you reflect your home design as it becomes an extension of your home. Patios can be anything from a small extension of the back of your home for  an extra couch to enjoy a cuppa or as elaborate as a fully self contained area to which you can entertain seat and cook for your guests and family.

Choosing the location  can be a difficult task, if you think you can just whack up an extension on the side or back of your house your mistaken.  You are really going to have to put in the time to look at your property from all angles and make sure you get the most out of your Patio without blowing out your budget.

Carefully sketching your property and how it sits with your house can assist to build a better perspective of how your patio may interact with your backyard.  When designing your Patio location keep in mind sun and elevation, if you’re lucky enough to have a view then take advantage of it, if not then try enhancing your patio with a feature wall or water feature.

Building advice

When selecting materials for your Patio consider the elements, cost and benefit of each carefully, when selecting a wooden patio with decking make sure you use a hardwood like kiln dried as it wont shorten or twist and change position once built.

Also remember that the more care you show your patio year after year the better your patio will appear so make sure you use a good patio oil at least once a year to bring up the polish, if painting your patio make sure you use a Hardy paint with a weathershield.

If using a concrete base again keep in mind your elements, if you get frosts will the concrete become slippery? there are now polished concrete options which you can throw down a layer of course sand to create grip. Make sure you contact your council to get sonme advice about planning, you may have height limits etc.
